Star Wars Complete Saga on Blu-ray Pre-Orders Announced at CES
As I tweeted earlier this week, there was a "Most Impressive" Star Wars Blu-ray announcement at CES. That is how it was being billed.
You know the saying, "better late, than never." It surely applies here. While it was already officially announced last year that the Star Wars films would finally be coming to Blu-ray this year. It was at CES on Thursday at the Panasonic booth that Darth Vader and legion of Stormtroopers released more details about the release. Along with a representative from Panasonic, Vader and company were joined by a representative from Amazon.com. Since it was taking place at the Panasonic booth, some had feared that it could be an exclusive deal with Panasonic (i.e. perhaps tied to their 3D hardware). Thankfully, that was not the case.
It's been a few years now since Blu-ray won the HD optical disc war (going head-to-head with HD-DVD). Perhaps there were some big titles waiting until the war was won before their releases, the Star Wars films were not among them. Fans have been waiting for an HD release of the titles for years now. And once again, fans like myself will need to re-purchase them all over again.
Still, at least you can get the entire saga on Blu-ray for only $89.99 pre-order from Amazon ☛ Star Wars: The Complete Saga (Episodes I-VI) [Blu-ray] (MSRP $139). That is less than what Star Wars: A New Hope retailed for when it was first released on VHS... on VHS! (it had retailed for $109 back in 1982 or 83 - that was just for one film in SD on VHS). In addition to the 6 movies included in the Blu-ray set, it also contains 30 hours of special features.
For those that may have a bias against one trilogy over another, well there's an option for you as well as in addition to the complete saga being released in one set, there will also be the two trilogies offered individually for $44.99 on Amazon (MSRP $69.99) ☛ Star Wars: The Original Trilogy (Episodes IV - VI) [Blu-ray] and Star Wars: The Prequel Trilogy (Episodes I - III) [Blu-ray]. As with the complete saga, it is now available for pre-order only.
The Blu-ray sets are to be released in September of this year (just in time for the holiday season of course). (UPDATE: The release date is scheduled for September 16, 2011).
Will this be the final ultimate release of the Star Wars films? Ask anyone that bought The Definitive Collection on Laserdisc. Of course not. There is mutterings that George Lucas will be re-releasing the films in the theaters in artificial 3D (since they were not originally shot in 3D). So I would expect at some point, they too will make their way to home video.
They showed a trailer for the Blu-ray release at CES. It is currently available to view on Amazon.com.
