Is New Trek, New Coke?

New Spock

After seeing the new Star Trek film and giving some initial reactions via Twitter, people are asking me for a fuller explanation of what I thought of it. The 140 characters that Twitter offers with each tweet does not lend itself to expressing my thoughts on this new re-imagined and reboot of Star Trek, so I will use this space to explain a little further about and will most likely do a full review in an upcoming podcast.

So the new Star Trek reboot has opened. Let's not be coy about it, it is indeed a reboot. It's a relaunch of the series or "franchise" if you will. It is Star Trek for a new generation, not The Next Generation.

To Boldly Go Where No Blu-ray Has Gone Before

Like the Star Wars film series, there are certain things that long-time die-hard fans find themselves buying over again and again with each new step in media technology. Perhaps you have done it as well, perhaps on a smaller scale with let's say The Beatles buying them on vinyl, 8-track, cassettes, compact discs, and then digital... err... oh they never made it that far yet, perhaps The Beatles is not the perfect example. Let's just stick with Star Wars and Star Trek here, but you get the idea. Back in the day

Do you have your "In Russell We Trust" and "In Moffat We Trust" shirts yet?

In Russell We Trust

You heard it on Doctor Who: Podshock and now you can take it with you where ever you go with shirts and other gear sporting the slogan, "In Russell We Trust" or if you rather have "In Moffat We Trust" or get them both. Many listeners to the podcast as well as website visitors, took the slogan coined by Ken Deep on the podcast and made it their own mantra.

A Second Second Life Meet Up for the Gallifreyan Embassy and Doctor Who: Podshock

Back in November 2006, to celebrate the 43rd anniversary of Doctor Who, the Gallifreyan Embassy and Doctor Who: Podshock decided to use Second Life (SL), a virtual world social networking service to bring members, audience, and all fans alike together no matter where in the world they may live.

May the Fourth Not Be With You

I really need to be careful that I do not turn into a grumpy, old cranky fan. Sometimes I feel I may be heading in that direction, if not already there. This has become even more evident lately on the cusp of the release of the new re-imagined Star Trek film by JJ Abrams coming out later this week.

Just One More Round, Friend

Bea Arthur as Ackmena

On Saturday the 25th of April 2009, almost a year after loosing Harvey Korman, we send a farewell to Bea Arthur he has died at the age of 86. I will always remember her for her groundbreaking role as the strong-willed iconic Maude character in the 1970's sitcom of the same name. You may remember her from The Golden Girls sitcom of a decade later.

The 9th Doctor verses The Ninth Doctor!

Comparing 9th Doctor Figures: Right: San Diego Comic Con exclusive, Left: less posable figureComparing 9th Doctor Figures: Right: San Diego Comic Con exclusive, Left: less posable figure

If you are like me, you may be wondering just what are the differences between the two figures available depicting the 9th Doctor (as portrayed by Christopher Eccleston) from the Character Options (and Underground Toys) Doctor Who line up.

As much as I would love to collect all the wonderfully detailed Doctor Who figures coming from Character Options these days, I just can't afford to do so nor do I have the space for them all. But there are some that I do want, chiefly all the Doctors and some of the classic adversaries. When it came time to get a 9th Doctor figure, I realized I had two choices available to me, but there was very little information on just what are the difference between the two outside that of the color of the Doctor's jumper.

Listener Miles Imel Creates 3D Rendered Hitchhiker's Guide to British Sci-Fi Artwork

Miles Imel, a long time listener of Doctor Who: Podshock who has recently started listening to Hitchhiker's Guide to British Sci-Fi was inspired by the podcast cover artwork to create this 3D rendered image. Without any assistance from us, he meticulously reused the logo from the cover art to use in this beautifully rendered scene.

Cheers Miles for creating this unsolicited artwork for us to use with the podcast.
